Road & Roundabout Firework Safety

June 30, 2017 by Naptown Buzz

Today the Carmel Police Department reminds citizens of Carmel Fireworks Ordinance 6-158. (Go read it now, or skip to the bottom of this article now, and come back here when you’re finished.) This is most likely similar in other Indianapolis area communities as well.

Road & Roundabout Firework Safety

For the record, it’s probably illegal to set off fireworks in the middle of, or on, the ample roundabouts that dot the Carmel landscape. No matter how tempting it may be, DO NOT DO IT!

We know, everyone likes to set off fountains in the middle of the street. But that’s probably not a good idea to start with. And it’s an even worse idea in or near a roundabout since most people don’t know how to drive a roundabout on a good day.

Drivers would probably get distracted and run you over while you’re lighting the firework ablaze. Or they may run over the embers in a vehicle with some sort of gas and/or oil leak, and the results would not be good.

Err on the side of caution. Stay safe, our friends. Set off your fireworks on your own property. Away from the roads and the roundabouts and away from anything that might catch on fire that shouldn’t be on fire. We don’t want to wake up on the 5th of July and hear about you being involved in a fireworks related accident.

Carmel Fireworks Ordinance 6-158

Here are the official Carmel Fireworks Guidelines:

Sounds associated with the legal consumer fireworks during the following days and times:

Between the hours of 5:00pm and two hours after sunset on June 29th, June 30th, July 1st, July 2nd, July 3rd, July 5th, July 6th, July 7th, July 8th and July 9th.

Between the hours of 10:00am and 12:00 midnight on July 4th.

Between the hours of 10:00am on December 31st and 1:00am on January 1st.

As always, if the fireworks are being set off in a dangerous manner, i.e. landing on the roof of someone’s home, and/or causing harm to life or property please call 317-571-2580 for non-emergencies or 911 for life threatening emergencies.
