Steven Ostachuk, 21, and Robert Butler, 25, Arrested for Robbery & Attempted Robbery

Just after 12 p.m. on May 14, 2017, officers with the IMPD were dispatched to the Kroger Pharmacy located in the 600 block of Twin Aire Dr on reports of an attempted robbery that had just occurred. The suspect had allegedly passed a note to a pharmacist demanding narcotics, before fleeing the scene, empty handed, to a waiting vehicle.

Then, hours later, just after 2 p.m., officers with the IMPD were dispatched the Family Dollar located in the 5200 block of English Ave on reports of a robbery that had just occurred. Responding officers learned the suspect allegedly passed a note demanding money. The suspect, after being given an undisclosed amount of cash from the register, then fled from the business.

IMPD Robbery detectives had responded to both locations and began gathering witness statements as well as potential evidence. Through tried and proven investigative techniques, detectives were able to identify suspects. On May 21, 2017, detectives located one suspect, 21-year-old Steven Ostachuk, getting into a vehicle in the 500 block of S Graham Ave. Detectives followed Ostachuk to the 5800 block of E Greenfield Ave where detectives were able to safely take him into custody without incident. The 2nd suspect, 25-year-old Robert Butler, was located and taken into custody without incident in the 500 block of S Dunson Ct on May 23, 2017.

During the course of the investigation, detectives obtained search warrants for the residences of Butler and Ostachuk. Evidence was located that allegedly linked both suspects to the crimes. Both suspects were interviewed at the IMPD Robbery Offices before being transported to the Arrestee Processing Center on robbery charges. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will review the case and make a charging decision.

This was a thorough investigation conducted by the IMPD Robbery Unit to bring a swift conclusion to two robberies just hours apart. Detectives across the city work countless hours to bring justice and closure to cases just like these. It is a part of their ongoing commitment to the citizens of Indianapolis in helping to make this city a greater place to live, work, and play!
