Juvenile Involved in a Police Action Shooting After Vehicle Pursuit

May 8, 2017 by Naptown Buzz

May 8, 2017 – 08:07 AM EDT

Elkhart, Indiana – Late Sunday evening, May 7, 2017, at approximately 11:10 p.m., a law enforcement officer of the Elkhart Police Department initiated a pursuit of a vehicle after observing traffic violations.

A short time later the pursuit ended near the area of County Road 20 and County Road 100 in Elkhart County, Indiana. The vehicle fled from the officer and entered the yard of a private residence where another officer from Norfolk Southern Railroad Police assisted. As the driver of the vehicle attempted to flee the area again, the Norfolk Southern Police officer discharged his weapon, striking the driver.

At this time, the driver, a juvenile, is being treated for a serious, but non-lethal, injury.

The Indiana State Police is continuing to investigate the facts and circumstances leading up to, and during, this incident with cooperation from the Elkhart Police Department and the Norfolk Southern Police Department. Norfolk Southern Police Department officers are official law enforcement officers in the State of Indiana, with full police powers.

Additional information will be released as is necessary to inform the public; however, this appears to be an isolated incident and no current threat to public safety appears imminent arising from this matter.

Please contact the Elkhart County Prosecutor’s office for further updates and information on this incident.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty
