Just after 2 p.m. on May 10, 2017, detectives and officers with the IMPD were conducting an investigation at a storage unit in the 4300 block of S East St, when they were alerted to a wanted subject being in the area. When officers confronted the wanted subject, later identified as 29-year-old Paul Reese, he immediately fled in a pickup truck. As he fled, he allegedly crashed through a chain link fence and got stuck in the mud. Reese allegedly pulled a gun and put it to his head when officers made their approach. Officers then requested the assistance of the IMPD SWAT Team.
The IMPD and Indiana State Police SWAT Team responded. Incident Command was established and other officers began coordinating efforts and created a perimeter. AMC Management was notified and evacuated the south end of their theater. The ramp to I-465 was temporarily blocked to help mitigate risk to the community. Officers were posted in and around the immediate area to ensure the public stayed away from areas at high risk.
Negotiators worked to resolve the situation. After just over three hours, SWAT Operators deployed gas into the truck. A short time later and further contact with Negotiators, Reese exited the truck and surrendered peacefully. IEMS personnel were staged and transported Reese to Eskenazi Hospital’s Holding facility for a checkout. He had an active warrant for felony fleeing law enforcement. He will be transported to the Arrestee Processing Center for booking after a checkout.
This incident was a tremendous undertaking and conducted with an outstanding level of professionalism and commitment to the best possible outcome. The preservation of life is priority one. The IMPD would like to thank AMC Theaters for their quick action in ensuring the safety of all patrons. IMPD would also like to thank the Indiana State Police for their assistance in traffic control and SWAT operations. The Indianapolis Fire Department provided a relief vehicle to ensure officers had the appropriate supplies to endure the weather and extensive operation. Thank you IFD. We would like to thank the community as well for their patience and cooperation while we worked to resolve the incident.
