Danny Ortiz heads up to the Pittsburgh Pirates

April 29, 2017 by Naptown Buzz

The Indianapolis Indians, in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Pirates, announced that outfielder Danny Ortiz‘s contract was selected.

Ortiz is the fifth Tribe player called up to Pittsburgh this season, joining right-handers Johnny Barbato and Dovydas Neverauskas, outfielder Jose Osuna and infielder Gift Ngoepe, and will be the fourth to make his major league debut.

Ortiz, 27, was batting .217 (13-for-60) with one double, three RBI and two stolen bases in 17 games for Indianapolis. Last year, Ortiz led the Indians with 17 home runs and finished second on the team in RBI (57).

Born in Caguas, Puerto Rico, Ortiz posted a .257 average (834-for-3,243) over the course of his nine-year minor league career. He collected 195 doubles, 34 triples, 91 home runs and 451 RBI in 891 games played.

Outfielder Justin Maffei was transferred from Rookie-Advanced Bristol to Indianapolis in place of Ortiz, leaving Indy’s active roster at a full 25 players.
