Accidental Death Involving Juveniles on City’s West Side

February 15, 2017 by Naptown Buzz

UPDATE: Wednesday, February 15, 2017, 12:53 AM

Detectives with the IMPD Homicide Branch have arrested a 17-year-old juvenile male in connection with tonight’s deadly shooting.

Through the course of the investigation, including interviews with several juveniles, it appears as though this shooting was accidental. The juveniles initially told responding officers the 16-year-old decedent was shot in the parking lot and ran to the apartment for help.  Detectives were able to determine the 17-year-old suspect and decedent were actually horse playing with a handgun inside of the apartment. Detectives allege the 17-year-old accidentally shot his 16-year-old friend in the head.

The 17-year-old juvenile was preliminarily arrested for reckless homicide. The case will be reviewed by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office for a final charging decision.  The decedent’s identity will be released at a later time.

This incident remains under investigation but serves as a tragic reminder that guns in the hands of juveniles have deadly consequences.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Homicide detectives are investigating after a male is found dead of an apparent gunshot wound.

Just after 6:30 p.m. on 02/14/2017, officers with the IMPD were dispatched to the 3600 block of N Glen Arm Rd on reports of a person shot. Responding officers located an unresponsive male inside an apartment. EMS personnel responded and pronounced the male dead on-scene.

Homicide detectives responded and began canvassing the area for witnesses. Detectives believe that the incident occurred in the parking lot of the apartment complex and that the injured male sought assistance from a nearby residence, where he later died. The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to assist in locating and identifying possible forensic evidence. The male’s identity will be released once next-of-kin has been notified.

Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana at (317)262-TIPS(8477). Information given via Crime Stoppers should be considered anonymous. This release may be updated as more information becomes available.
