Tyler Glasnow to Make MLB Debut Today

July 7, 2016 by Naptown Buzz

Tyler Glasnow

The Pittsburgh Pirates today recalled right-handed pitcher Tyler Glasnow from Triple-A Indianapolis. Glasnow, who will make his Major League debut today at St. Louis, will wear uniform #51.

To make room for Glasnow on the 25-man active roster, left-handed pitcher Kyle Lobstein has been optioned to Triple-A.

Glasnow went 7-2 with a 1.78 ERA (96.0ip/19er) and 113 strikeouts in 17 Triple-A starts this season. He surrendered two runs or less in each of his last 10 starts with Indy and in 15 of his 17 starts overall. Glasnow currently ranks third among International League pitchers in ERA, first in strikeouts and first in opponents batting average against (.176). He went 3-0 with a 0.79 ERA in six starts during the month of July while allowing just nine hits in 34.0 innings of work.

In addition to Tyler Glasnow today, the Pirates have had three other pitchers make their Major League debuts in a starting role this season (also Chad Kuhl, Jameson Taillon and Steven Brault). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the last season in which Pittsburgh had four or more pitchers make their big league debut as a starter was 1903 (six): Kaiser Wilhelm, Bucky Veil, Gus Thompson, Jack Pfiester, Lew Moren and Doc Scanlan.
