Knozone Action Day Declared for Indianapolis June 25, 2016

June 24, 2016 by Naptown Buzz

The City of Indianapolis forecasts Saturday, June 25, 2016 as a Knozone Air Quality Action Day.

The air quality may become unhealthy for individuals, especially active children, the elderly, and anyone suffering from lung disease or other serious health problems. Sensitive groups throughout Central Indiana are encouraged to reduce prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors on Knozone Air Quality Action Days. People with concerns about how air pollution affects their health should contact their doctor.

Saturday’s forecast indicates that ground-level ozone levels may be high. Ground-level ozone is the primary contributor to smog in urban areas. Smog is formed when harmful emissions from sources like cars, lawnmowers, and power plants react with sunlight. Ground-level ozone is more common from April through September, because heat and sunlight are important factors in its formation.

Residents can help prevent Knozone Action Days by reducing their contribution to ground-level ozone through these simple actions:

  • Reduce vehicle idling
  • Use active forms of transportation (walking, biking, or public transportation)
  • Fill gas tanks and mow after 7 p.m.
