13th Annual Covering Kids and Families Back-to-School Day Aug. 3

July 29, 2013 by Brian Groce

image001The 13th Annual Covering Kids and Families Back-to-School Day will be held at the Marion County Public Health Department, 3838 N. Rural St., on Saturday, Aug. 3 from 8 a.m.-Noon. More than 10,000 people are expected to attend, making it the largest back-to-school event in Indianapolis.

Health screenings, health information, the opportunity to enroll in free or reduced-price health insurance, child immunizations, games, entertainment and school supplies are part of the annual summer event. Backpacks with school supplies will be handed out to school-aged children who attend.

“We help meet a tremendous need for getting children ready for the upcoming school year,” said Pamela Humes, Covering Kids and Families Program Director and event coordinator. “The line will likely form before sunrise and the last person will leave more than eight hours later.”

Those needing back-to-school immunizations should bring current shot records as well as an insurance or Medicaid card. Dental and other screenings also will be available. Individual birth certificates for school enrollment can be purchased during the event. Identification is required.

“In order for our children to be truly prepared for school they must be healthy and have the appropriate supplies,” said Virginia A. Caine, M.D., director, Marion County Public Health Department. “We are proud to make health screenings and basic school supplies available to our community.”

The Indianapolis Fire Department will have a large presence with its Fire Safety Festival, a high-energy area featuring music, food and interactive educational displays. More than 50 community organization booths will also be at the event.
