Spotlight 2013: Seeing Red at Clowes Memorial Hall April 22

April 17, 2013 by Naptown Buzz

For the 19th time in the last two decades, the Indianapolis performing arts community will come together for a one-night gala performance for HIV testing and prevention. More than 20 organizations will take the stage beginning at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 22, 2013, for one spectacular night of music, dance, theater and spoken word performances when Randy Deer and Wayne Zink present Spotlight 2013: Seeing Red at Clowes Memorial Hall of Butler University.

This is the largest fundraiser of its kind in Indiana and the only time in 2013 when the full breadth of the Indianapolis performing arts community will appear on one Indianapolis stage.

The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra will open this year’s gala with the “Overture to Candide,” originally performed under the direction of Leonard Bernstein in 1957.Spotlight 2013 also features three new acts, including: the Indianapolis City Ballet, which will perform to So in Love by Cole Porter; Know No Stranger, an improv group fast catching the attention of the arts community; and BOBDIREX, which is staging the Indianapolis company premiere of Monty Python’s Spamalot.

Other highlights of this year’s show include:

  • The Nicholas Owens Dance Company world premiere of Birds of Paradise, choreographed to the music of “Morning Bird” by Sade
  • “Color US Red,” an interrogating literary piece by Tasha Jones that questions how red is seen from anger and death through to passion and love
  • “8-Track Mind,” an audience participation number by The Fourth Wall, featuring hits of the 1970s, and
  • In a nod to the current debate regarding marriage equality, the Indianapolis Men’s Chorus will close the evening with “Wedding Megamix,” a mash-up of wedding-themed songs.

Tickets are $20, $45 and $120 and are available at the Clowes Hall box office, at all Ticketmaster locations, www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 1-800-982-2787.  The $120 VIP ticket includes a pre-performance reception at 5:30 p.m. and a ticket to the Artist AfterGlow party immediately following the performance.

Every performer, technician and stagehand is donating his or her time and talent, including the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees of Local 30 and the American Federation of Musicians – Local 3. As a result, nearly 90 cents of every dollar raised from the event goes toward grantmaking, All proceeds fromSpotlight 2013: Seeing Red will benefit the Indiana AIDS Fund, a program of The Health Foundation of Greater Indianapolis.
