The Indianapolis Veterinary and Emergency Center (IVR/IVEC) will host its biannual Animal First Aid and CPR Training Class from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, October 27. IVR/IVEC is Central Indiana’s original 24-hour emergency and critical care facility, and is well known for its PET-E-911 emergency phone line and the Midwest’s first Canine and Feline Blood Donor Program.
The training class will use hands-on learning techniques to educate pet owners on how to asses and handle emergencies. Participants will break into groups and learn how to muzzle and/or restrain, how to carry and transport, and how to bandage and splint an injured animal. Other topics that will be covered include: head trauma, shock, bleeding, choking, poisoning, heat stroke, drowning, seizures, broken bones, burns and paralysis.
The training class will utilize a life-sized mannequin called ResusciDog to demonstrate and allow hands-on animal CPR training. Pet first aid kits will also be available for purchase.
Less than six percent of dogs and cats that experience cardiopulmonary arrest survive to hospital discharge according to the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (VECCS). Additionally, the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) reported that one out of four pets would survive if one pet first aid technique were used prior to seeking veterinary care.
Training will take place at the IVR/IVEC emergency and critical care center located at 5425 Victory Drive in Indianapolis. Pre-registration is required. Doors open at 8:30 a.m. The cost for training is $35 per person and includes an animal first aid manual, expert instruction, hands-on training, refreshments, certificate of completion and a tour of IVEC’s facility.
