“You Are Here” to feature Shawn Causey’s New Silver and Gold Paintings

July 25, 2012 by Mel McMahon

Aug. 3 to feature gallery opening party, as well as open studios

Inviting viewers to discover hints of their own reflections absorbed in these shiny, marred surfaces, Indianapolis artist Shawn Causey unveils her newest work – silver and gold metallic spray paint applied over textured layers of drywall mud and house paint – on Aug. 3 at Stutz Art Space gallery in the historic Stutz Building.

“The more time you spend looking and the closer you get to the work, the more you see reflected shapes and light all around you,” she says. “These pieces are engaging in different settings – when I turn out the lights in the studio, they nearly glow with the light from the window.”

With degrees in design and music from Herron School of Art & Design and Butler University, respectively, Causey finds deep satisfaction working alone in her studio at the Stutz, just as she did in the practice room at the piano. This inspired isolation has roots in her Indianapolis upbringing: As the oldest of six girls, she found solitude to be a rare and treasured experience.

During the free Aug. 3 opening party, Causey will talk about her work and provide art patrons with a few entertaining surprises. The event is sponsored by Avant Garb Rentable Costumes and Wilks & Wilson, Purveyors of Fine Elixirs, which will serve samples of cocktails made from their handcrafted, organic infused syrups.

In addition to the party in the gallery, more than 12 studios one flight up from the studio will hold a mini-open house from 5 to 9 p.m. Artists with open studios will include John Bartlow, Susan D. Brewer, Emily Budd, Andy Chen, Victoria Gilleron, David Joseff, Amy and John Kirchner, Gayle Moore, Colleen Murphy, Elise Augustine Schweitzer and Tom Potter.
