Let’s Go To The Cabaret… Again!

July 6, 2012 by Mel McMahon

I can’t stop saying enough good things about Bob Harbin‘s interpretation of CABARET!  From the actors, to the stage direction, to the band, this team hit the ball out of the park.  At certain points in the night, I had to remind myself that I was in the audience and not REALLY in Berlin circa 1931.

From the first number, I was captivated.  Jason Johnson is enchanting as the Emcee, the Master of Ceremonies.  He reminds you it is okay to laugh, he will call you out on being uncomfortable, and he takes you right through the story as if you are a part of it.

Claire Wilcher commands the stage as Sally Bowles and leaves you wanting more.  Her voice is so notable you just want her to keep singing.  The roles I have seen Wilcher perform in the past have all been comedic, so it was great to witness her in a more dramatic and dynamic piece.

This is a show that makes you want to know more about the characters, where they are from, and what happens to them after the curtain drops.  Supported by a truly gifted cast, this is one of Indianapolis’ must see theatre performances!

If I had stars, I would give it four out of five.  Keep in mind Act I is significantly longer than Act II, so take a bathroom break before you take your seat.  You won’t want to miss a single minute of CABARET!

All performances take place at the Athenaeum Theatre, 401 East Michigan Street at Massachusetts.  Show time is 7:30pm with a 3:00pm matinee on July 15.  Reserved seating is $22, with discounts available for groups of 20 or more and seniors.  For tickets, call (317) 280-0825 or visit bobdirex.com.
