Come To The Cabaret

July 2, 2012 by Mel McMahon

In association with the Anthenaeum, Bobdirex will present the Broadway musical, CABARET at the historic Anthenaeum Theatre downtown July 6, 12-15, and 20-21.

Based on John Van Druten’s 1951 play “I am a Camera,” the show is set in 1931 Berlin as the Nazis are rising to power.  Focusing on the Kit Kat Klub, the production revolves around cabaret performer Sally Bowles and her relationship with young writer, Cliff Bradshaw, only to be complicated by playboy Max.  The 1966 Broadway Musical became an immediate hit playing to 1165 performance and winning 12 Tonys. The 1972 film earned eight Academy Awards and three Golden Globes.

Inspired by the 1998 Broadway revival, this production is dedicated to the Santayana quote, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.”  Keeping to Bobdirex’s mission statement, this will not be a regular production of CABARET.  By design, the show is more suggestive and edgier, therefore it is not recommended for children under the age of 16.

All performances take place at the Athenaeum Theatre, 401 East Michigan Street at Massachusetts.  Show time is 7:30pm with a 3:00pm matinee on July 15.  Reserved seating is $22, with discounts available for groups of 20 or more and seniors.  For tickets, call (317) 280-0825 or visit bobdirex.com.
